Thrilling and relaxing and totally cool - tubing on the
Farmington River!
When hot days arrive in the Hartford area, the best way to cool down is to head
to Satan's Kingdom State Recreation Area, located on Route 44 in New Hartford,
Connecticut.
Here's how it works. Free parking, changing houses and
restrooms are available at Satan's Kingdom. When you're ready to go, wait in
line to sign waiver papers and rent your tube and life jacket. For 2007, prices
are $20 on weekends and holidays, $18 on weekdays. Be prepared to pay with cash.
Then, get ready for your river ride.
The 2.5-mile tubing run is more calm than wild, but you
will encounter three sets of rapids that will get your heart racing. Keep your
feet up, and hold on tight. The second set of rapids is the most likely to toss
you off your tube, so lifeguards are stationed here. The rest of the river is
unattended, and for much of your ride, you'll drift along lazily, enjoying the
sounds of rushing water and the warmth of the sun. Sunscreen is a must.
Tubing the Farmington River isn't for everyone. For
starters, you must be at least 10 years old, at least 4'5" tall, and you need to
know how to swim. No… dogs can't tube.
The current can be strong in places, especially after a
big rainstorm and in the early part of the season. The water is quite cold, and
once you start your ride, there's no turning back.
Farmington River Tubing operates daily from Memorial
Day weekend through mid-September. Call ahead, 860-693-6465, to check river
conditions and hours of operation before you make the trip to New Hartford.
If you're ready to go tubing on the Farmington, here
are a few additional tips:
- Wear something on your
feet. My preferred footwear is an old pair of Keds, but water shoes or
strap-on sandals work, too. Don't wear flip-flops or any other footwear
that you might lose easily.
- Wear an old T-shirt over
your bathing suit. Farmington River Tubing actually suggests a
long-sleeve T-shirt to help prevent your arms from chafing as you hang
onto your tube, but on most summer days, you'll probably be too hot in
long sleeves, and in the unlikely event you wind up having to swim, you
want to be as unencumbered as possible.
- Don't wear sunglasses, a
hat, jewelry or anything else that you wouldn't want to lose.

HIKING and FALLS
Dennis Hill State Park -
Hike to the summit of this 240-acre estate
for panoramic views reaching as far away as New Hampshire. Fall foliage season
makes Dennis Hill an autumn wonderland.
2 miles south of the village, on
our left, is *Dennis Hill, a State Park, bequeathed in 1934 by Dr. F. S. Dennis,
a distinguished surgeon, largely responsible for introducing the use of
anaesthetics in this country. The hill, 1610 feet elevation, has a fire tower
with a remarkable view; Long Island can be seen on a clear day. In the ravine to
the east of the house is an unusually fine stand of laurel. The windswept Dennis
Hill park contains the sagging remains of the 240-acre former estate of
Frederick Shepard Dennis, a New York physician who gave the property to
Connecticut in 1935. Today, it is a popular spot for picnics.
Campbell Falls State Park Reserve
- Visit a Connecticut State Park
or Forest and explore the wealth of diverse natural areas and unique features
that will make your experience memorable.
In
the Campbell Falls park at the northern edge of town, the Whitney River tumbles
60 feet over two cascades.
Haystack Mountain State Park
-
Travel the twisting mountain road or hike the rugged trail
to the top, either way you will be astounded at the beauty of mountain laurel in
June and the spectacular colors of foliage in the fall.
At Haystack Mountain, whose
entrance is just a short walk from the town center, hikers can bound up steps
carved into the rocks to a 1,677-foot summit. A 34-foot cylindrical tower, set
to reopen in the spring, has sweeping views of the Berkshire foothills,
blanketed with hemlock, birch and mountain laurel.

Bash Bish Falls -
Falls Road Mt. Washington, MA 01258

Bash Bish Falls might be the most
spectacular waterfall in the state of Massachusetts. It is literally located on
the state line of New York and Massachusetts in Mt. Washington, MA (a thirty
second drive up from Taconic State Forrest which is in Copake Falls, NY). The
falls plummet through a series of dramatic forges before finally cascading about
80 feet into sprinkling pools of water.
Bash Bish Falls is located
next to the 4,169 acre Mount Washington State Forest which offers 30 miles of
trails, including the South Taconic Trail. It also adjoins New York’s 5,000 acre
Taconic State Park . Nearby Mount Everett State Forest offers informal
picnicking at Guilder Point. From the top of Mount Everett visitors may take in
a view spanning the three states.
